Demurrage 

This fee is applicable when the customer holds carrier equipment in the terminal for longer than the agreed amount of free time. It can be incurred for both exports (early drop-off) and imports (late pick-up).
Export: Demurrage days are counted from gate-in (full) to container loading minus free days.
Import: Demurrage days are counted from container discharge to gate-out (full) minus free days.
Applicable to all containers that remain at a terminal location longer than agreed free time.
*Applicable calculation methods may vary by country.

Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoro Islands, Madagascar, Namibia, storage is billed and payable directly to the port operator.

Detention

Detention charges occur when the consignee holds onto the carrier’s container outside of the port, terminal, or depot beyond the free time that is allotted. 
Export: Detention days are counted from pick-up empty to gate-in full minus free days.
Import: Detention days are counted from gate-out full to gate-in empty minus free days.*
This fee is applicable to all containers that remain in the customer’s possession longer than the agreed free time.
*Applicable calculation methods may vary by country.

Import Release Process

We are constantly striving to find ways to make working with us easier, whilst ensuring that we act in a legally responsible manner. Therefore, please familiarise yourself and share with your teams, the below requirements which will assist with the shipment release process.

Prior to release

Freight and landside charges must be requested prior to presenting your documents at the release counter; upon settlement the proof of payments must be sent to safhtfrc@maersk.com and once the receipt number has been received customers can approach the counter for the release to be processed.

In the event that payment is made via a bank deposit, the original deposit slip needs to be presented at the counter before the payment can be processed.  If not possible, the payment can be processed once the funds reflect in our bank account.

To facilitate this more efficiently, the Power of Attorney template should be completed in full to ensure that the invoices are generated within the agreed turnaround time and you are afforded time to ensure payment is made prior to your release request. 

Where the party requesting release is not the consignee on the bill of lading or waybill, the original release letter will need to be produced by the party duly authorized, in terms of the release letter, by the consignee to receive the cargo.

When producing a Power of Attorney to Maersk for release of cargo to a party other than the named consignee, kindly note that:

• All Power of Attorney’s must be provided on a valid company letterhead (including the full company name and company registration number).
• All Power of Attorney’s must include the specific bill of lading number and container number/s.
• Power of Attorney’s must confirm the party to whom the consignee is authorising the release.

Alternatively, a blanket release from the consignee stated on the bill of lading, authorising a specific clearing agent to take release on their behalf for a defined period is allowed. 

The validity period is limited to one year and will be granted upon completion of the Power of Attorney in the format provided, once Maersk has acknowledged receipt of the original. The agreement to accept the blanket release will remain at the discretion of Maersk.

The blanket release will be the referenced document during the validity period and Maersk will not accept any liability for acting in accordance with the blanket release letter in cases where the relationship between the consignee and its agent no longer exist and Maersk was not being advised in writing of same timeously. Blanket release letters may not be used in the case of negotiable bills of lading.

Maersk has a contract with the consignee and may only act on the instruction of the consignee. Therefore, if the release instruction is to Party X from the consignee, Maersk will honour the instruction. Maersk will not be act upon instruction from Party X to authorise release to additional parties (handover shipments).

When requesting invoices, we kindly ask that your subject line reads as “Invoice Request: B/L number”.

Should the above details not be advised when requesting an invoice or when requesting the release, the release will not be executed at our end.

Copies of our local charges, surcharges and free time are available on our website, please note that should your container be physically be crossing the border, any applications for cross border free time need to be sent via email to the customer services team prior release of the cargo and no free time will be updated retroactively.
