My name is Brian Nichols, and for almost seven years now, I’ve been a Maintenance Mechanic in Georgia, USA, at Maersk. When I first joined, I was looking for somewhere stable, a place where I could build a career and provide for my family. Maersk, with its global reach, forward-thinking mindset and reputation for reliability, felt like the right path. I didn’t just want a job; I wanted a path—and Maersk has given me one.
Growing beyond a job title
What keeps me going in my role, day in and day out, is the blend of challenge and consistency. There’s always a new puzzle to solve, something to keep running smoothly, and over time, I’ve become someone my colleagues can count on. But the real heart of my experience here lies in the opportunities I’ve been given to outside my job title. I’ve had the chance to collaborate across different departments, lend a hand during critical situations, and, most importantly, contribute to meaningful change through the Diverse Abilities Network and Neurodiversity ERN (Employee Resource Network) at Maersk.
At Maersk, we intentionally call ‘disabilities’ diverse abilities to celebrate the skills and achievements, not perceived limitations. The Diverse Abilities and Neurodiversity ERN is a global network of colleagues who work to increase awareness of the strengths and challenges of people with diverse abilities, and how to support those with diverse abilities.
A personal mission
My connection to diverse abilities isn't just professional; it's deeply personal. I am diversely abled myself; I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder about six years ago. My son lives with multiple diverse abilities – cerebral palsy, septo-optic dysplasia, and amniotic band syndrome. Every morning when I wake, as I think about the challenges he faces in a world that often isn't designed with him in mind, it fuels a fire within me. It’s why I’m driven to work hard, to build things that last, and to speak up for what’s right. This personal journey has shaped me into a more empathetic leader, a more understanding father, and a relentless advocate for change, both at work and beyond.
Empowered to make a difference
And this is where Maersk has truly shone. They haven't just acknowledged my experiences; they've empowered me to use them for something bigger than myself. Through the Diverse Abilities Network, I’ve been given a platform to share my perspective and drive initiatives that create real impact. Projects like ADIMS – "A Day in My Shoes" – which brings the lived experiences of diverse abilities into our training environments, have been fully supported. Here, my voice isn't just heard; it's valued.
Changing perspectives by sharing lived experiences
I co-lead the Diverse Abilities and Neurodiversity Employee Resource Network (ERN) in North America and also serve on the Global Diverse Abilities and Neurodiversity ERN too. In these roles, my primary goal is to ensure that lived experience leads the conversation. I’m passionate about creating and leading immersive learning tools like “A Day in My Shoes" because I believe that true understanding comes from feeling. I bring honest, unfiltered storytelling, whether it’s a training session, a leadership meeting, or a global awareness campaign. I don’t just want people to see diverse abilities; I want them to get a glimpse of what it’s like to live with them. Maersk and the Diverse Abilities Network has provided me with the space and support to make this a reality.
A culture of inclusion and understanding
I’m always working on how to balance work and my responsibilities at home; I won't pretend I have it all figured out perfectly. There are days when the scales tip, but I focus on prioritizing, adapting, and staying true to my mission. My family will always come first, and Maersk has shown incredible understanding and provided the flexibility I’ve needed along the way.
At Maersk, it has been about more than just fixing things in my job as a maintenance mechanic; it’s been about building understanding, fostering empathy, and creating a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported. It’s about knowing that my personal experiences can contribute to a larger purpose, and for that, I am truly grateful to be part of the Maersk family.
