Ocean volumes from China to the U.S. are on the rise following the May 12 tariff adjustment, and this is putting added pressure on U.S. West Coast terminals, particularly Los Angeles, Long Beach, and inland networks, as more cargo moves through key gateways in the weeks ahead.

As activity builds, terminals and inland ramps may experience periods of high utilization. This may impact appointment availability and equipment flow during peak hours. Terminals encourage off-peak appointment windows, including third shift and weekends, to help maintain fluid operations and reduce wait times. Your prior planning can help avoid demurrage or detention charges.

To help you plan effectively, we want to share the steps we are taking to support continuity and ensure the smooth movement of your cargo.

How We Are Supporting You

  • Planned extra loader capacity to accommodate elevated demand and support equipment availability.
  • Monitoring cargo dwell by customer and location and reaching out proactively to help avoid delays or additional costs.
  • Coordinating with terminal operators and depot partners to maintain consistent gate operations and expand empty return options where needed.
  • Partnering with chassis providers to align supply with market needs.
  • Working closely with rail providers and equipment teams to manage railcar supply and reposition empties to key terminals.

What You Can Do

  • Finalize documentation and customs clearance early to ensure timely cargo release.
  • Schedule container pickups as soon as cargo becomes available. Avoid relying on same-day appointments, which may be unavailable under constrained conditions. Appointments are released 48 hours in advance. Please visit terminal pages for appointment details.
  • Confirm chassis and driver availability early if you’re using your own trucker. If you prefer a managed solution, our Store-Door service provides end-to-end assistance for inland delivery, including drayage, chassis, and terminal appointments, to help reduce the risk of missed pickups or delays.
  • Return empty containers promptly to reduce the risk of detention and congestion. Use off-peak appointment windows (third shift and weekends) to improve turnaround times and help keep terminals fluid.
  • Where possible, consider extended gate hours at your facilities to enable usage of off-peak appointments at terminals.
