In response to the continued operational challenges affecting global shipping networks, including prolonged voyage deviations, increased transit times, equipment repositioning costs, capacity constraints, and higher operational expenses, Maersk will introduce an Emergency Contingency Surcharge (ECS) applicable on shipments moving from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka Area to South Africa and Indian Ocean Islands (S5S Trade) effective 10-September-2026.

The surcharge is being implemented to support the additional costs incurred in maintaining reliable services and network stability across the trade.
