The evolving security situation in the Middle East continues to be challenging, impacting logistics and customer supply chains. 20% of global fuel moves through the Strait of Hormuz, and the current situation surrounding the strait has significantly impacted global access to fuel. To safeguard cargo integrity and maintain the stability of our network, which includes ensuring fuel availability for cargo movements, we are now taking additional proactive operational measures.
Due to the current situation, we have seen no other alternative than to implement a temporary Emergency Bunker Surcharge (EBS). This surcharge covers the impact of fuel availability, cost and mix outside of what is covered in our Fossil Fuel Fee (FFF); this means we are better positioned to have the necessary access to fuel and the ability to move it to necessary locations.

- The EBS will apply globally without exception from 25 March 2026 (price calculation date), subject to regulatory approvals.
- The EBS will be monitored every 14 days and adjusted if relevant —upwards or downwards—based on fuel availability, cost and mix.
- Updated levels will be published on maersk.com.
Why we are doing this
The ongoing conflict has had a considerable impact on the international fuel market. As a result, many refineries within the region are either offline or operating at reduced capacity and export ability is very limited. This circumstance has led to substantial disruptions in global fuel supply chains.
To preserve network stability, we have undertaken significant redistribution of fuels to offset shortages in the Middle East, and are securing alternative sources from different locations and suppliers.
By implementing this surcharge, we are best placed to continue to offer said stability as we have access to the needed fuel and the ability to move it to where it is needed.
We understand the impact this situation may have on your business and are ready to assist your logistics in any way we can.
We appreciate your continued partnership, and are committed to supporting your logistics needs and delivering consistent service throughout this period of heightened market volatility.
For any questions, please reach out to your local Maersk Sales representative. Our teams are ready to assist you.
